COMMENTS MADE BY JOHN TEELING AT THE AGM OF COOLEY DISTILLERY

Corporate Negotiations

  • No offer for shares in Cooley has been received by the board. Discussions with Angostura have been in progress for seven months but it has not been possible to reach an agreement.
  • Operations, management and direction of Cooley were never an issue. Cooley intends to double sales in five years. We have distilled the whiskey to meet that goal and we are now putting in a marketing organization to serve the market. This plan and the opportunities for Cooley attracted Angostura who are focussing on Europe.
  • There is consensus that Cooley will use the Angostura worldwide marketing network. Benefits have come already. We have already started in France. We will introduce Angostura to some of our distributors in the near future.

Markets and Marketing

  • Cooley is going to develop brands, particularly malts. We are moving away from a reliance on Retail Own Label towards more profitable products. This will be reflected this year in more profit, a better mix of sales but a slower growth in sales.
  • Brand building takes time and money. It needs to be done and we have started. The new Kilbeggan is the first development. More changes are in the pipeline.

Financial

  • Profits in the first half of 2002 were 25% ahead of last year. For the year as a whole we will beat last year.
  • Cooley is investing money in marketing. Over five years this investment will pay off. We also need to address the needs of loyal shareholders. The board will be active in attempting to find a solution which matches both needs.

18 February 2002 - Setanta the Bull

The thousands of you who named the cooley bull Setanta, may like to know how he is progressing very well is the answer. He is big and mean. We had to have the State Bull Advice Service (Yes, there is one) help us. They have recommended stronger fencing and a female companion. The companion is being selected by the State Service.
